February 2005

Dear East African,

What a great month! I have been back in America for the past three weeks and have had the opportunity to meet so many people and promote the EAC in so many different ways. Since arriving in the US, I have been able to meet the wonderful people of the Wisconsin Jaycees who have been endlessly supportive of our organization. I have presented to the West Seattle Rotary, had a booth at the UW School of Social Work, had a booth at the 2005 Western Regional International Health Conference at the UW, had a booth at the University of Puget Sound, held the EAC's Annual Board Retreat, and have given a presentation at Green River Community College. At each of these events, I have been amazed by how many people are already knowledgeable about our work. Thanks to all who have invited the EAC to have a presence at your many events. It has been wonderful meeting you all!

I will be leaving the US on March 21st, and have much, much more planned for this next month. I will be presenting at the UW School of Social Work, speaking to a group up in Bellingham, attending an open house/fundraiser in Washington DC, manning a booth at the UW Social Justice Forum, manning a booth at the "North Seattle Family Center Celebrates Cultures of Africa" event and attending the US Jaycees National Convention in Daytona Beach, Florida, March 16th through the 20th.

Over the past month, we have also brought on two new members of our Board of Directors as well as found ourselves a fabulous new Administrative Assistant! If you would like to learn more about any of our upcoming events, or request us at other events, please email me at sjeneby@eastafricancenter.org or call me at 206-271- 9557.

    School Fee Sponsorships
I am so happy to announce that all of this year's child sponsorships have been fully funded. The Vutakaka Center has received enough money for sponsorships to provide for all of its students in need. A huge thanks goes out to all of you who have made donations to this cause!!

For 2006, the EAC will no longer be offering individual student sponsorships, but will rather announce a total fundraising goal for our annual scholarship fund. Therefore, we will be asking you, in November and December of 2005, to contribute to our annual scholarship fund.

At this time, however, we ask you to "Adopt the Center". Specifically, we need people to fund days, weeks and months of the Center's operation. Adopting the Center for one day costs $160.00, one week costs $800.00, and one month costs $3,200.00. We are so grateful for any help you or your organization can offer. Adopting the Center allows us to continue helping people learn to produce higher crop yields, learn tailoring skills, learn to read and write, learn basic business and health information, and even extends opportunities for technological training to youth in the community. Vutakaka Center helps hundreds of men, women and children every day to live healthier, happier lives. Please adopt the center today.

    Volunteer in Kenya!

The EAC is a remarkable grassroots development organization offering real opportunities for positive change in the lives of hundreds of people, each and every day. In order to keep the organization continually running in good order, we are in need of ongoing volunteer support, both in and out of Kenya.

If you are interested in volunteering in Kenya, visit www.comekuona.org. Come Kuona is a separate organization, based in Kenya, that recruits and guides volunteers through the entire volunteer experience of working with us at Vutakaka Center in Takaungu, Kenya. We always need more volunteers to help us run the Center. If you have any questions about the program, please email volunteer@comekuona.org.

Moreover, if you have a passion for international development, and/or skills in non-profit / NGO management, and can't get to Kenya but would still like to volunteer, please contact me, Suzanne Jeneby, at sjeneby@eastafricancenter.org. I would be happy to list you as one of our "on-call" volunteers in the US. (This means we would contact you if we need extra assistance for specific events or special tasks)

Please assist the EAC through donating items...
In Takaungu we have great need for rechargeable batteries (all sizes), Microsoft Office Suite (including Publisher, and Front Page), and computers (preferably laptops in good condition). Please contact me, Suzanne Jeneby, if you are able to donate any of these items. I will be in the US from February 1st to the middle of March and am able to carry these items with me back to Kenya upon my return. My email address is sjeneby@eastafricancenter.org

Did you know that it costs just $20 an hour to run all aspects of the EAC? Even with such low costs, we very much need your help to keep our doors open and our programming going. Please consider sponsoring an hour or day each month so we can continue to offer all our great programs to the people we serve. Your gift will make you a partner in providing education and resources that hundreds of children, women and men can use to improve their own lives.
